ALBANO DI LUCANIA
Located on the top of Mount San Leonardo at 899 s.l.m, it almost seems like a forgotten corner of the world immersed in silence. Its position, on one of the peaks that are part of the "Lucanian Dolomites",
nevertheless it gives it a characteristic face, the panorama that unfolds before it is a suggestive and picturesque scenery: high peaks and wide valleys follow one another and border on infinity. It was founded by the Longobards to defend itself from the Saracens around the IX century, in a place above which huge woods stretch out further to reach the territories of San Chirico Nuovo, Tolve and Tricarico, in the Matera area. Hairpin bends and really bold slopes, deep voids, are presented to the visitor if they decide to hoist themselves to the village by turning the Basentana road. And inside the void, on one side the bite of the Lucanian Dolomites that jagged scratches of air and sky, hinder the hawks' step; on the other side the valley floor that leads to Potenza and the few houses and a peace that slips away between the roads that are not able to remain straight even in the plain. The country experienced ancient settlements, as evidenced by some megalithic walls of the 4th century. A.C., of stone weapons and caves carved into the rock.
